Now that Halloween is behind us and Thanksgiving is quickly approaching, it’s that time when we start to think of being grateful and finding ways to “give back” to our community. Many of the moms we’ve talked to have said that they work part-time to improve their relationships with their family. What better way to do that than by volunteering together!

Suzanne and I are both lucky that working part-time allows us to be active in our kids’ schools and with the organizations that we support.  This lets us get to know the teachers and staff at the schools better (as well as our kid’s playmates!).  And we both feel like it’s important to instill this sense of community in our kids at an early age.

Many organizations have a hard time finding support during the 9 to 5 business hours. One of the benefits of a part-time work schedule is that flexibility enables moms to help out during the day and also makes it easier to volunteer on the weekend since we don’t have the huge list of weekend chores that our full-time comrades might have. That flexibility also allows part-time working moms to get more involved in organizations. Some moms have mentioned that they will become even more involved as their kids get older and “need them less.” We’ve even interviewed moms who have founded new organizations as another role they juggle.

How do you weave “giving back” into your other commitments?  What has been your biggest challenge in trying to volunteer?
