roasting marshmallowsWe’re into the swing of things for school and I can’t help but take a moment to reflect one last time on our summer fun.

This summer has included many firsts for our family. Most recently, it was our first day of Kindergarten at a new school (our older son LOVES his new school, teacher, class, etc.). It’s also the first time our younger son will be at pre-school without any chance to see big brother, which I don’t he minds.

There have been many firsts throughout the summer too. It was our boys’ first taste of s’mores (HUGE HIT) and first time for our 2.5-year old on a water slide (also HUGE HIT). My husband and our older son camped out in the backyard and they had a great time. It was also our first injury from camping equipment, which was a not-so-fun moment of the first camping experience. I might add that I love that our boys will have some fun bonding while they go camping with my husband. While they enjoy that male bonding time, I will take that opportunity to have some girlie or simply me time.

On Father’s Day we took our first full hike, where everyone walked the whole time. When you have young children, this is an AMAZING moment. And everyone really enjoyed the hike, which I love.

We did our first overnight trip visiting friends (as a family). We’ve had friends visit us, but this was our first trip to visit another family in another city and stay at their house. The boys had a great time. And that same weekend, it was the first time to see a lot of different animals in-person and actually watch alligators and crocodiles being fed. The boys even fed tortoises for the first time, some of which, were about the size of our younger son.

I love the reactions our boys have to something simple that we might overlook as grown-ups like trying s’mores for the first time. Their eyes lit up when we roasted the marshmallows and got the chocolate ready on the graham cracker. And the sparkle in their eyes during that first bite. It was amazing to watch and experience with them.

We going to try to keep them experiencing firsts during the school year and not only during summer. We’re not sure what we’ll try next, so I’d love to hear your firsts to get ideas. Did you have any firsts this summer? Planning any firsts for you or your family in the near future?
