We’ve heard from a few moms we’ve interviewed about being 100% mom and work on top of that. I would think most moms want to be 100% mom and working full-time seems like another 100%. I have always said I want to be 100% mom and a part-time professional. It’s even a point my husband and I discussed before having children, so that the expectations were set and agreed to early on.

It’s no lie that motherhood is hard. Many of the moms we know and that we’ve interviewed for our book do the lion’s share of everything associated with their children and most household duties.

And those moms who work part-time aren’t interested in walking away from their careers. This combination of the two roles is what I can relate to. I spent years building my career before and after attending grad school. Even the graduate degree was a challenge and an accomplishment. I still have drive and a desire to achieve professional goals. My professional goals have changed, though, which I am OK with.

I love my children and my husband. I am happy to be there for them. It’s fun having Mommy time with my boys in the afternoon before Daddy gets home or having the chance to do things on the days when they’re not at school. I try to come up with things to do that might be interesting to our boys — to watch them learn new things and figure things out or go to the playground on a nice day.

And, as much as I love my family, I still want to have those things that are mine, especially professionally. I like being 100% mom, but I also like those challenges that show what I can do – create, strategize, and develop ideas – away from my family. I like the feeling of accomplishing something professionally. It’s really important to me to be able to balance these two sides effectively.

Can you relate to that 100% mom plus concept?
